What is the Online Immigrant Visa Application
The online immigrant visa application, DS-260, is the application specifically for the Department of State (DOS) for an IR-1 and CR-1 Spouse Visas. Therefore, complete the form during the DOS NVC Phase.
The form is specifically done on-line in the Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC).
This application is the Beneficiary’s visa application. For this reason, most of the information to fill in on the form is of the Beneficiary. However, there is a minor amount of information to fill in of the Petitioner.

When to complete the Online Immigrant Visa Application
After you pay your fees, fill out the online Application for Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration (Form DS-260). There are two processing fees:
- Immigrant Visa Application Processing Fee (IV Fee)- $325
- Affidavit of Support Fee (AOS Fee)- $120
After submitting your payments online, you may have to wait up to 1 week for NVC to process your fee payments before continuing to the next step. You will not be able to access your Online Immigrant Visa Application Form (Form DS-260) until NVC is complete in processing your payments.
For doing the DS-260 by Direct Consular Filing (DCF), you do not need to pay any fees first. For DCF, fill out the DS-260 on-line after the embassy gives you your case number.
The form is done on-line in the Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC). Once the payments are made, the Online Immigrant Visa Application is accessible.
Prepare for the Online Immigrant Visa Application
Prepare ahead of time to complete this on-line application by gathering all the information you need to fill in. In order to be ready, get all this information ahead of time.
As mentioned above, most of the items are about the Beneficiary. In fact, there is only a little bit of information for the Petitioner on the DS-260, Online Immigrant Visa application.
Your spouse needs a passport from his/her foreign country by this point. Specifically, the passport information is part of the information for Form DS-260. Therefore, make sure that you are working on obtaining the passport during the USCIS Phase.

Completing the Online Immigrant Visa Application
Again, the Online Immigrant Visa Application form, DS-260, is specifically done on-line in the Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC).
The following items are specifically are in need to access the application including:
- Internet access
- NVC case number
- Invoice ID Number (from your NVC letter) (Not needed when filing DCF)
Once you have access, start entering information into the form.
All answers must specifically be in English.
Most fields on the DS-260 are mandatory. You may leave fields marked “Optional” blank or select “Does Not Apply.” All other fields must be completed: the application will not allow you to submit a form with any mandatory fields left blank. If you do not answer questions that apply, your form may be rejected.
If you cannot finish, you may save the partially completed DS-260 by clicking save and log out.
You can access your saved application by returning to the Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC) website and selecting View/Edit from the IV and Alien Registration section of the Immigrant Visa – Summary Information screen. You will then be provided with a list of all applicants in your case along with the status of each application (NOT STARTED, INCOMPLETE, or SUBMITTED). To continue updating an incomplete application, simply click on the “Edit” button to the right of the application’s status.
At the end sign the form electronically and submit.
Print out the confirmation page and bring it to your interview. You do not need to bring the completed DS-260 to the interview.
