Fall Foliage Great Recreation Experience for New Families
Fall Foliage in Northern United States
Fall is here in the northern parts of the United States which means it is fall foliage time.
In the northern United States, we have four distinct seasons (spring, summer, fall and winter). Each of these seasons are much more prominent as compared to countries and other areas nearer to the equator.
Fall is my favorite time of year. Why do you ask. It brings an explosion of brilliant fall foliage colors. For example, the leaves in the trees turn from all green to fantastic colors of reds, orange and yellows.
If you now live in the northern part of the United States, you get to see natures big color show before settling down into winter’s sleep. In the north, as days shorten and temperatures become colder, the summer green leaves transform into the vivid amazing colors reds, oranges, golds, and browns before the leaves fall off the trees. On special years, the colors are truly breathtaking.
How and When to See Fall Foliage
There are several ways to see fall foliage including:
- Going for a walk or hike.
- Driving around roads and up in the mountains
- Fall foliage train rides
The trees usually start their fantastic color show each year in October. The timing is not exact as it depends on the start of cold crisp weather. Usually, this varies by a few weeks year by year.
Also, the color show typically starts earlier in the north and works its way south. Similarly, the color show also starts earlier in higher elevations and works later to lower elevations.
When the fall foliage is at its brightest, it is called “Peak”. Also, people who go out to look at fall foliage are specifically called “leaf peepers”.
Leaf peepers look for areas of peak fall foliage before they go leaf peeping. There are many ways to find out when and where are the areas of peak fall foliage. For example, here are some ways to find out when and where to find peak fall foliage:
- Local TV weather news or websites
- Weather.com fall foliage maps
- neighbors or relatives
